Why do I keep pining after this truck?

I spotted this on Kijiji a while back. It’s still there (or at least the ad is):

I can only imagine the sort of work it would take to get something like this running. But for some reason, I really like it. I much prefer the grill on it to the earlier GMC/Chevy trucks. I think it’s a classy looking machine. I’d want to keep it nice and rusty looking, and actually use it like a truck should be used.

What do you say, Oppo? Would getting something like this be insane?

The same reason these guys did? They’re cool old trucks.

You’d probably need $10k to get it on the road properly, but it’s almost worth picking up to hang on to while you think about it.

There’s another one nearby that popped up for $7,500, and it was already roadworthy.

What all do you suppose would need to be replaced on a truck like that?

I really wish they’d do another episode with pigpen. It’s begging for something to be done with it.

It really is. The one you’re looking at doesn’t really look that bad in the pictures. Don’t get me wrong it would be a lot of work and take time but unless there is some serious rot underneath I think it would make a fun project.

Who even knows how bad the rust is underneath that thing. The chassis could be completely shot, for starters, and if the body mount areas are rotten, you’ll be looking at some serious metal work to make it safe. The engine would be the easy part, just find any old carbureted Chevy engine and throw it in there until you decide what to do with it. The sensible thing is to buy the one that’s already roadworthy, but if you have time and patience, and a dream to use them on, this would make a cool project!

I’ve been poking around looking at parts for these things in the last few minutes, and it turns out Fat Man ( a well known hot rod supplier) makes a complete chassis for it: http://www.fatmanfabrications.co/products/1947-…

I was looking at this the other day as well. Most places seemed to want $10k+ for a chassis.

I’m almost tempted to go look at it, just to see how bad the rust is. Earlier today I took a quick look through “Project Hugo” on YouTube - some guy resotring an old Nissan. It’s amazing to see how rust can rot away at things. It does make me wonder how hard it’d be to make a new chassis on my own, but if I’m going out that much, I’d be tempted to build my own vehicle from the ground up. Something like a replica of the Scamander RRV.

The worst that can happen is you don’t tow it home, so why not? I’d forgotten all about the Scamander, that thing is cool!

Most of the time those things rot the sheet metal. If you are close enough, go check it out.

The Scamander is definitely a favourite of mine. I’ve been wanting to learn to TIG weld aluminum so I’d at least have the skills to do part of it.

I do wonder how bad the rust is.

It’s about an hour away, and near some relatives. I think it could be worth the trip, even if to go look at it.

How badly do the frames rust?

I had a 57 when I lived in Michigan. The state of salt. The frame had surface rust but no penetration or really bad areas. If that one sat in a field with tall grass growing up under it, it could have more rust on the frame.

I do kind of wonder about that. It looks like it probably rolls, as there isn’t a lot of tall grass under it.
